An Occasion Requiring Shoes

This was written using the visual prompt at Magpie Tales.

I was sooo glad to get home and remove those instruments of torture!
I must be getting old! I mostly like to wear something comfortable, and if they are a little bit old and worn I don’t really mind. The heels on those shoes only look low, but when you’ve got to wear them for several hours they might as well be four-inch heels.

I do remember when I used to crip about in four-inch stiletto heels all day at work. Of course, I was eighteen, young and stupid back then and they really did make my legs look good, along with the mini skirts, and they made me taller.  I could actually run in four-inch heels! These days I’m built for comfort, not speed.

I keep these little black shoes strictly for weddings and funerals – and anything else that might crop up that requires a little style. They’re the only ‘dress’ shoes I own.

The weddings have been fewer and farther between, but the funerals are increasing in number. I suppose that’s what happens when you’re nearer the end of your life than the beginning. There will come a time when I will probably know more dead people than live ones. I don’t like funerals, but sometimes they can’t be avoided. When I turn my toes up I don’t want anyone coming to my funeral dressed in black, and I’m going to have Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum played at the end. If you’ve gotta go, you might as well go out with a good beat.

  5. Great Magpie, Sue! The voice of your piece is friendly and conversational. Personality shines up through the words.

I can’t imagine wearing heels at all, ever. That’s why my narrator used them for target practice. :)

You’re right–this writing stuff is fun. I’m over here waving at you across the globe in Montana.

  6. I love that many women have used the prompt as a symbol of age–you do that so well in this piece. I am watching my grandparents in the phase of their life where they know far many more dead people than live ones. It makes me sad for them and certainly contemplative about my own mortality. It’s interesting how the changing of shoe styles (for women) is a definite marker of moving closer to that phase of life. Great Magpie!

  7. Brilliant! – I can’t remember the last time I wore heels, must be more than 35 years ago. I keep a smart pair of flats for those occasions when I have to look something akin to smart. Love this post :)

  8. LOL I’ve been wearing sandals with a “low” fashionable heel for two days now and I’m ready to crawl weeping to my chiropractor. I used to pritter back and forth to school a mile on heels in my teens and now in my forties I look at the lowest heel and cringe.

  9. Lucklily I have never even started wearing heals on a daily basis, I only wear them special occasions, and I only have one pair, with a very low heel , and I’m still in my early twenties! I really can’t understand who would torture themselves with high heels.

  12. Great magpie….I want a postmortem party at my favorite San Francisco Thai restaurant – no funeral at all! I do want my ashes in film cannisters, to give to all my friends, to be sprinkled around the world when they travel -
so I’ll continue to be part of the world I’ve visited.

I am thrilled that at the anciet age of 65, I just got my first book of poetry out on Amazon!
( Poems about the things that have been important to me in my journey through life, some humorous, some sad, some that may have meaning to you as well )

  14. When my turn comes I don’t want a funeral either. Instead I want my friends…I have no family…to get together and have a jolly old time. There is to be no black just the casual clothes we wear here in the desert. I want them to line dance to the tune of Elvira. I’ll be right there in line with them except they won’t see me.

  16. Sue, left click on the image. Then right click “save image as” to save it in your doc file. Then you can upload it onto your post. Hope that helps!

  17. Right: Every time I see one of the young wearing spike-heeled boots I want to offer them my cane for they are surely going to need help in the future! Fran
